USMNT to begin 2030 qualifying in 2027 window
WASHINGTON, DC — The United States men’s national team is set to begin its 2030 World Cup qualifying campaign in the September-October 2027 international window, marking the program’s first trip through a new regional format after qualifying automatically as a 2026 co-host.
That makes Mauricio Pochettino’s current run of Nations League and Gold Cup matches more than short-term preparation. They are part of the build toward a qualifying cycle that will determine whether the USMNT can reach another World Cup on home-continent soil, this time with the tournament headed overseas.
FIFA has not settled the size of the tournament
The 2030 World Cup is scheduled for June 8 to July 21 and will be staged across six countries, with the opening matches in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay before the main tournament shifts to Portugal, Spain and Morocco.
One major piece is still unresolved: whether the event will stay at 48 teams or grow to 64. CONMEBOL has pushed for expansion, while UEFA and CONCACAF favor the 48-team model used in 2026. FIFA has not announced when it will make that decision.
Host nations are already in automatically
All six host nations are expected to receive automatic berths. That means Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay should open the tournament in South America, while Portugal, Spain and Morocco are also through without qualifying.
The arrangement reflects the tournament’s centenary setup, with the first three matches serving as a tribute to the 100th anniversary of the first World Cup.
CONCACAF outlines a three-round road
For the United States and the rest of CONCACAF, the path is already mapped out. The region will use three rounds of qualifying, with the top 13 teams, including the USMNT, entering in Round 2.
Round 1 features teams ranked 14 through 35 in home-and-home ties during the first half of the September-October 2027 window. Round 2 then splits the top 13 plus the Round 1 survivors into six groups of four for home-and-away play, with the top two in each group advancing.
Final CONCACAF round would send three teams through
The last round in CONCACAF would divide 12 teams into three groups of four. The top two from each group would qualify directly for the World Cup.
The two best third-place teams would move on to the inter-confederation playoffs, giving the region another route into the tournament if direct places are filled.
Other confederations are still sorting their formats
Asia, Africa, South America, Oceania and Europe have not all finalized their plans, though several broad outlines are already in place. CAF is expected to stay close to its 2026 format, while OFC is widely projected to keep a setup that sends one team directly and another to the playoffs.
UEFA is working on a new Nations League-inspired structure, and South America is waiting on the wider tournament decision before settling how many teams it will send beyond the automatic host nations.
What it means for the USMNT
The immediate takeaway for U.S. fans is that the 2030 path is different from the 2026 cycle. The USMNT will have to earn its place through CONCACAF again, and the new format should make each window matter from the start.
With the tournament still several years away, the qualifying framework is the first clear marker of what the road will look like for Pochettino’s team as it tries to build toward another World Cup run.
