Nashville SC are within reach of MLS history
NASHVILLE, TN — Nashville SC are not just chasing their first Supporters’ Shield. They are also positioned to challenge the MLS single-season points record with seven matches remaining in the regular season.
The club enters the final stretch with 60 points from 27 games and a 10-point cushion over the Vancouver Whitecaps, who still have a game in hand. That makes Nashville strong favorites to finish on top of the overall table, while also keeping the league’s all-time points mark in sight.
What Nashville need to beat the record
The current MLS points record belongs to Inter Miami, who finished the 2024 regular season on 74 points in Lionel Messi’s first full campaign in Florida. Since MLS moved to a 34-match regular season in 2011, that total has stood as the benchmark.
Nashville need 14 points from their last seven games to match that figure and 15 to take the record outright. At their current pace, the math works in their favor: B.J. Callaghan’s side have averaged 2.22 points per match so far, which would put them right on the edge of history if they keep it up.
A fast rise for a club still early in its MLS life
Nashville only entered MLS in 2020, but this season has already become their best in club history. They have surpassed their previous high of 54 points, set in both 2021 and 2025, and are well ahead of any finish they have managed before.
The club’s top league results before this run were third in the Eastern Conference and seventh overall in 2021. This year’s consistency has pushed them into position for a first major regular-season trophy and a place among the league’s best single-season teams.
Defensive edge has powered the charge
Nashville’s run has not been built on flash alone. Their official club messaging has pointed to defensive records as one of the defining storylines of the closing weeks, alongside the MVP race and other league-wide milestones.
That balance has helped them stay ahead in a competitive race while also creating the chance to do something no MLS side has done since the schedule format changed. The final seven games will decide whether this becomes a trophy season, a record-setting season, or both.
The seven matches that could decide it
Nashville’s route to the record begins with a trip to Austin FC on Saturday, Oct. 10, followed by a home game against Sporting Kansas City on Oct. 14. They then face the San Jose Earthquakes away on Oct. 17 and CF Montréal away on Oct. 24.
After that stretch, Nashville host the Philadelphia Union on Oct. 28 and the Red Bull New York on Nov. 1 before closing the regular season at FC Cincinnati on Nov. 7. Any slip-up could make the chase more complicated, but the schedule also gives them plenty of chances to finish with a statement.
What it would mean for MLS
If Nashville hold their form, they would become the new standard-bearer for regular-season success in the modern MLS era. Matching or surpassing Inter Miami’s 74 points would underline just how dominant this team has been across 34 games.
For U.S. soccer fans, the finish line is about more than one club’s silverware. It is a rare chance to watch a league record fall while the Supporters’ Shield race is still alive, with Nashville trying to turn a breakout season into a historic one.
