When the radar lights up, seconds matter. Keep these actions close — they’re the ones that save lives.
Tornado warning
Get to the lowest floor, most interior room, away from windows. Put as many walls between you and the outside as possible. Cover your head and neck.
Flash flooding
Turn Around, Don’t Drown. Just 12 inches of moving water can carry off a car. Never drive or walk through flooded roads — you can’t see what the water has done to the road beneath it.
Lightning
When thunder roars, go indoors. Stay inside for 30 minutes after the last rumble. No tree, no shelter in the open.
Extreme heat & cold
Check on neighbors and the elderly, hydrate in heat, layer and cover skin in cold, and never leave children or pets in a parked car.
Before the season
Have a charged phone, a battery or hand-crank NOAA weather radio, and a plan for where your household will shelter. See Radar & Resources to build your kit.
