Parkinson Urges Calm Amid Slow Start to Summer Business
Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson has called for patience as the club navigates what he describes as a “slow” summer transfer window. The Championship side is yet to make a single signing ahead of their pre-season tour of the United States, but Parkinson insists the club will not panic.
“As ever it’s patience, making sure we can hold our nerve to get the right players in who we feel can make a difference,” Parkinson told BBC Sport Wales.
The Red Dragons, who travel to America later this month for three high-profile friendlies, are operating under the new Squad Cost Rules (SCR) that have replaced the previous Profit and Sustainability regulations. Parkinson pointed to the financial framework – along with the ongoing World Cup – as key reasons why the market has been subdued.
US Tour Looms With No New Faces
Wrexham face Leeds United in Tampa on 26 July, before taking on Liverpool in New York and Sunderland in Pennsylvania. Parkinson admitted he would love to welcome new recruits before the trip but is prepared to wait.
“I’d love to be able to be taking a couple of new signings on that tour. If it happens, great, if it doesn’t then we’ll work like we did when we were in Australia [last year]. All the time over there we were working on the recruitment and we didn’t let it impact on formulating the squad we wanted.”
The manager’s calm approach reflects the reality that building a competitive squad for the Championship is a longer-term project. Wrexham finished 15th in their first campaign back in the second tier, and Parkinson is keen to evolve rather than overhaul.
Squad Departures Create Room for Moves
Fan favourite Paul Mullin left by mutual consent last month, while midfielder Tom O’Connor completed a permanent switch to Peterborough United. Young striker Mo Faal has joined Port Vale on a season-long loan, and Parkinson confirmed more exits are likely.
“Of course, along that journey players are going to have to go because of numbers which we’ve worked on with Paul going. One or two others need to go out as well.”
These moves free up wages and squad places, but incoming business remains complex. Parkinson acknowledged the division’s growing strength, with relegated clubs and ambitious rivals making it “harder” than the previous season.
Financial Discipline and the Wait for the Right Fit
The introduction of SCR means every Championship club must carefully manage their squad costs. Wrexham, backed by Hollywood owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, are no exception.
“We’ve got to operate within the rules and we’re working on ways to do that to give us the best squad going forward. Equally we’ve got a good group of players in the building. We’ve got to remember that we’ve got a squad which came close last year.”
Parkinson’s tenure has seen the club rise from the National League to the Championship with back-to-back promotions. His reputation for building resilient, committed squads means supporters will likely trust his judgement – even if the quiet window tests their patience.
