Pre-season ambitions kick off in Helsinki
Wrexham face Manchester United at the Olympic Stadium in Helsinki on Saturday, with Phil Parkinson treating the glamour friendly as a crucial benchmark for his Championship side. The match is the first of four against Premier League opponents this summer, part of a deliberate strategy to sharpen Wrexham ahead of their second season in the second tier.

"For Man United, it's an important game for them as it is for us," Parkinson told BBC Sport Wales. "They've got players who will be coming back in late, but they've still got a lot of first team players who will be available for the game as well. So, a great test for us, it really is."
Defensive discipline the priority
Parkinson knows that against elite opposition, the fundamentals without possession become paramount. Yet the Wrexham boss made clear his side will not be parked in their own half.
"As always, when we were in the other divisions we looked to these games as a test and this will be absolutely no different," he explained. "The out-of-possession stuff becomes really important against the better quality teams. But as we've always done, we're not just going to these games to stop the opposition."
World Cup context adds spice
While United manager Michael Carrick will be without several players still returning from the 2026 World Cup, Wrexham themselves welcome back two international defenders. Dom Hyam was part of the Scotland squad but did not see action in their group-stage exit, while Liberato Cacace started all three of New Zealand's matches.
"I spoke to Libby and Dom while they were both away, I was keeping in touch with them," Parkinson added. "Of course, the results were disappointing, but Scotland were in a really tough group and New Zealand are always going to be up against it to a certain degree. But an amazing experience to be part of that tournament."
Building on a historic friendly victory
Two years ago, a then League Two-bound Wrexham stunned a youthful United side 3-1 in San Diego. That result, while largely symbolic given the experimental line-ups, underscored the club’s ambition. Now, as an established Championship outfit, Parkinson insists the objective remains the same: to measure the team’s progress against top-level opposition.
American tour and Championship readiness
After Helsinki, the Welsh club fly to the United States for further high-profile friendlies against Leeds United, Liverpool and Sunderland. Parkinson, backed by Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, believes this intense schedule will leave his squad far better prepared for the Championship than a year ago.
"If you look back over those games – Chelsea, Bournemouth, Man Utd when we played in San Diego – they've all been decent games," Parkinson said. "We're hoping this will be the same and I'm sure it will be. The main thing for both teams is the game has got the right intensity level, and there's a competitive element to it. Obviously no one wants to pick up any injuries at any stage, but particularly at this stage in pre-season."
"For our lads, it's just focusing on what we need to do in this game and make sure that we come away from it with the preparations, taking that next step forward before we get on the plane to America."

Meanwhile, Parkinson refused to be drawn on reports linking Wrexham with defender Matias Moreno, stating only that the club is "always looking to improve" but offered no further detail on the transfer speculation.
