Rodman ends months of uncertainty with Spirit extension

Trinity Rodman has chosen to keep her prime years in the NWSL, putting pen to paper on a new three-year contract with Washington Spirit that will reportedly make the USWNT forward the highest-paid player in women’s football.

The 23-year-old’s previous agreement — a four-year deal worth $1.1m — ran out in December, prompting intense speculation over whether she would follow other American stars to Europe. Rodman was understood to have received substantial overseas offers that Washington initially could not match under the league’s salary cap framework.

NWSL’s new rule helps Spirit compete with Europe

Rodman’s extension, which takes her through the 2028 season, arrives on the back of a significant change in NWSL roster regulations. The league recently introduced the “High Impact Player Rule”, allowing teams to spend up to $1m above the salary cap on a qualifying marquee player.

To meet the criteria, players must demonstrate elite standing through defined benchmarks — such as appearing in major annual rankings like the Guardian’s Top 100 women’s footballers in consecutive years or placing highly in recent Ballon d’Or voting. The rule was designed to give clubs a fighting chance in negotiations when Europe’s financial muscle threatens to pull top talent away.

A statement move after high-profile exits

Rodman’s decision is seen as a major win for the Spirit and the NWSL at a time when the league’s ability to retain stars has been openly questioned. Recent months have featured a growing list of attention-grabbing departures, with several prominent names linked to, or completing, moves to top European clubs.

Against that backdrop, keeping Rodman — arguably one of the most marketable and impactful American attackers — lands as a statement of intent: that the NWSL wants to be a destination, not a stepping stone.

Spirit owner Michele Kang underlined the significance at a press conference in Los Angeles, praising Rodman for turning down what she described as “compelling alternatives.” Kang later added, with a pointed note of satisfaction: “I’m just very happy to tell you, I did deliver, didn’t I?”

Spirit lifer, champion, Olympic gold medallist

Rodman signed her new contract onstage alongside Kang, dressed in a jacket and tie, as the Spirit put a celebratory stamp on a saga that had lingered since the offseason.

Selected by Washington in the 2021 NWSL Draft, Rodman has spent her entire professional career with the club. She helped the Spirit win the NWSL Championship in her rookie year and has been part of multiple deep playoff runs since. Internationally, she added further shine to her résumé as a member of the United States side that won Olympic gold in 2024.

For Washington, the deal is about more than keeping a star name — it secures the centerpiece of their present and future, while testing how effectively the NWSL’s new financial tools can shift the balance in the global talent race.
