Tottenham Agree Club-Record Deal for Tonali
Tottenham Hotspur have completed the signing of Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United in a deal that could reach £100m, smashing their transfer record for the second time in a week. The north London club had an initial bid of around £80m rejected but returned with an improved package worth an initial £92.5m plus £7.5m in performance-related add-ons.
The 26-year-old Italy international has signed a long-term contract and is expected to earn more than £275,000 per week. Tonali’s arrival continues an aggressive summer spending spree under manager Roberto De Zerbi, who identified his countryman as a target years ago during his time at Sassuolo.
Tonali’s Journey: Ban, Redemption and Silverware
Tonali joined Newcastle from AC Milan for £55m in July 2023 but his career was thrown into turmoil just months later when he received a 10-month ban from the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) for breaching betting rules. The suspension sidelined him for the majority of the 2023/24 campaign, raising questions about his future at St. James’ Park.
However, the midfielder returned with a point to prove and became a key figure in Eddie Howe’s side. He played a pivotal role as Newcastle ended their 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy by lifting the Carabao Cup in 2025. His resilience and technical quality have now convinced Spurs to make him the second-most expensive sale in Newcastle’s history—behind only Alexander Isak’s £125m move to Liverpool.
“Sandro is a player I have admired for a very long time,” said De Zerbi. “He has the perfect mix of tactical intelligence and warrior spirit. He will be fundamental to our project.”
Spurs’ Summer Spending Spree Passes £200m
The capture of Tonali comes just days after Tottenham paid West Ham United £85m for fellow midfielder Mateus Fernandes. That deal had itself set a new club benchmark, only for Tonali to eclipse it almost immediately. The combined outlay on Fernandes and Tonali takes Spurs’ summer spending beyond the £200m mark.
Earlier in the window, Tottenham also invested £52m in centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton & Hove Albion and added defensive reinforcements on free transfers—Andy Robertson from Liverpool and Marcos Senesi from Bournemouth. The total outlay, including add-ons, could climb to £237m, signalling a clear statement of intent from the Premier League club.
