Spygate Scandal Recap
Southampton were expelled from the Championship play-offs in mid-May after admitting they spied on three clubs during the 2025/26 campaign. The club was found guilty of filming Middlesbrough's training session before the first leg of the play-off semi-final, and watching sessions involving Oxford United and Ipswich Town earlier in the season. Saints had beaten Middlesbrough over two legs in that semi-final, but were subsequently thrown out, allowing Boro to advance to the final where they lost to Hull City.
Eckert Takes Responsibility
Speaking to BBC Radio Solent, head coach Tonda Eckert expressed his remorse:
"It hurts for a number of different reasons. It's tough to read some of the things that are out there, I've held my hand up for this judgement on something I have authorised. I am responsible and I apologise for bad judgement."
The German, appointed permanently in December, admitted the immediate aftermath was extremely difficult.
"You can't expect to come into a standing ovation... There's so many emotions that come out, that you need to channel for yourselves."Yet he insisted the squad has returned with "lots of smiles and a good energy", looking forward.
Points Deduction and FA Investigation
Alongside the play-off expulsion, Southampton will start the upcoming Championship season on minus four points. The EFL imposed that sanction as part of its ruling. Meanwhile, the Football Association continues its own investigation into who at the club participated in or knew about the spying, and could impose individual bans. Eckert said:
"I felt it was a very professional process from the FA, taking time to ask questions and listen to my version of events. Now all there is to do is wait for the outcome."
Owner Solak's Backing
Despite calls from some quarters for a managerial change, owner Dragan Solak has publicly backed Eckert, stating he will not sack him. Eckert acknowledged:
"Its a very big commitment from him."The focus now shifts to pre-season and climbing out of the early deficit.
"Now it's down to us and to me to keep giving excitement in the way we play football and keep winning football matches. At the same time, we can't expect we can just do the same things again and get the same output. It doesn't work like that."
