World Cup winner Thierry Henry has weighed in on the leading contenders for the 2026 FIFA World Cup – and England are not among his top picks. The former Arsenal and Barcelona forward, who lifted the trophy with France in 1998, believes the tournament in North America will be decided by a familiar set of heavyweights, with one surprise package muscling in on the conversation.
“I see the same nations that have dominated recent tournaments continuing to set the pace,” Henry told FourFourTwo. “Experience, depth, and the ability to manage games in difficult conditions – those will be key. And some teams just aren’t there yet.”

England arrived at Euro 2024 as favourites and came painfully close, but Henry sees persistent flaws that could be exposed on the biggest stage. “They have fantastic individuals, but international football demands a collective understanding that England still lack against the very best,” he explained. “When you face a low block, can you find the pass? When you’re pressed high, can you play through it? Those are questions I still have.”
The former France captain also pointed to the psychological hurdle that has tripped up generations of English talent. “Winning a knockout match when you’re expected to win is different. Until they prove otherwise, I can’t put them in my top three.”

So who does Henry tip for glory? Argentina remain his frontrunners, despite Lionel Messi entering his twilight years. “They have the best midfield balance and a winning mentality that carries over from Qatar,” he said. Brazil, with a rejuvenated attack spearheaded by Vinícius Jr., are next in line, followed by Spain, whose possession-based style Henry believes is “coached to perfection” under Luis de la Fuente.
Perhaps surprisingly, Henry also highlighted Morocco as a dark horse capable of repeating their 2022 semi-final run. “They are a team that knows how to suffer and strike. Defensively they are incredibly organised, and on the counter they have pace that terrifies anyone.”
