Former Arsenal defender Takehiro Tomiyasu is on the brink of completing a free transfer to Venezia, returning to Serie A three years after leaving Bologna for north London.
According to TuttoMercatoWeb, the two parties have reached an understanding on a three-year contract worth around €1 million net per season, plus performance-related bonuses. Developments could be finalised as early as this weekend.
Sverko injury forces Venezia's hand
The Lagunari have moved quickly for Tomiyasu following a serious injury to defender Marin Sverko, who recently underwent hip surgery and faces three to four months out. That setback left Coach Eusebio Di Francesco short of options at the back and accelerated the pursuit of the 27-year-old Japanese international.
Sassuolo were also credited with interest in recent days, but Venezia appear to have won the race for Tomiyasu's signature. His versatility—able to play across the entire back line—makes him a valuable addition as the club prepare for the new campaign.
Tomiyasu's fresh start
Tomiyasu spent three seasons at Arsenal after joining from Bologna in 2021, but injuries limited his impact. Now a free agent, the 42-cap Japan star is set for a new chapter in Italy, where he first made his name with Bologna before earning a move to the Premier League.
"The agreement is in place, and only the final details remain," a source close to the negotiations told TMW. "Venezia acted decisively once Sverko's injury was confirmed."
For Venezia, securing an experienced international on a free transfer represents smart business as they aim to build on last season's survival in the top flight.
