Record-Breaking Deal
Tottenham Hotspur have completed the sensational signing of midfielder Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United in a club-record deal worth up to £100 million.
The deal sees Spurs pay an initial £92.5 million, with a further £7.5 million in add-ons, shattering the previous high set just days ago when Mateus Fernandes arrived from West Ham United for £85 million. The Italy international has committed to a contract expected to be worth more than £275,000 per week.
Despite late interest from Manchester City, Tonali was determined to reunite with fellow Italian and Spurs head coach Roberto De Zerbi, who made the 26-year-old a priority target upon taking charge.
"Tonali is a very good signing, he is one of my favourite players in the Premier League, he is a proper, proper midfielder," said Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson.
Quick Facts
Fee: £92.5 million initial, £7.5 million add-ons (total £100 million)
Contract: Over £275,000 per week
Previous Club: Newcastle United
Newcastle Profit: £45 million (signed for £55 million from AC Milan in 2023)
Spurs' Statement of Intent
The signing of Tonali marks the second time in a week that Tottenham have broken their transfer record, as part of an unprecedented summer spending spree that has already passed the £200 million barrier.
Alongside Tonali and Fernandes, Spurs have paid £52 million to bring centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton & Hove Albion, while also securing the free transfers of Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi and Martin Dubravka. The outlay highlights a dramatic shift in strategy after back-to-back 17th-placed finishes in the Premier League.
The aggressive recruitment drive has been partly funded by the £50 million sale of promising defender Luka Vuskovic to Brighton. Nevertheless, the net spend remains eye-watering for a club that narrowly avoided relegation on the final day of last season.
Emotional Goodbye to Newcastle
In an emotional post on Instagram, Tonali paid tribute to Newcastle and its supporters, reflecting on a transformative three-year spell that saw him win the Carabao Cup in 2025 — the club's first trophy in 70 years — and start a family on Tyneside.
"Three years ago I came to Newcastle not really knowing what to expect. Today it's time to say goodbye and it's hard to find the right words."
"The game brought me to Newcastle. Today I leave with my wife and our son, born during my time here. This city gave me more than football. It gave me a home."
Tonali joined Newcastle from AC Milan for £55 million in July 2023, but his early days were overshadowed by a 10-month betting ban. He bounced back to become a key figure in Eddie Howe's midfield before this high-profit sale.
Merson: 'Tottenham Will Have a Good Season'
Sky Sports' Paul Merson believes the double midfield revamp could propel Spurs back into the top half of the Premier League.
"Whenever I've watched Tottenham, I always think they are a bit over-run in midfield, they do not ever dominate games. The manager has highlighted that and brought in two very good midfield players. I expect them to have a good season next year."
For Newcastle, the sale represents an extraordinary return on investment. Only the £125 million transfer of Alexander Isak to Liverpool has generated more cash for the club, and the funds could fuel their own rebuild under Eddie Howe.
