Courtois left the pitch in the 71st minute with what was described as a leg twinge. The Real Madrid goalkeeper felt able to continue, but Garcia insisted on replacing him with Lammens, citing the need for full fitness.
“Only players who are 100% fit can play,” Garcia said after the match.
However, the move backfired dramatically. With four minutes remaining, Lammens spilled a low drive from Pau Cubarsí, allowing Mikel Merino to score the winner for Spain, sending Belgium crashing out.
