Romero rescues Spurs, but pressure grows on Frank

Tottenham’s turbulent season lurched on at Turf Moor as Cristian Romero struck in the dying moments to salvage a point against Burnley — a result that did little to quieten growing unrest around head coach Thomas Frank.

Spurs left Lancashire with a 2-2 draw that, on paper, halts the bleeding after a miserable run. In reality, it underlined how fragile Tottenham have become. The away end made its feelings plain throughout the second half, with chants calling for Frank’s dismissal as the club’s league form continued to unravel.

Frank arrived in north London billed as a steady, pragmatic appointment — a coach expected to restore structure and consistency. But that reputation offered little protection on a bleak afternoon in which Tottenham again struggled to manage key moments, allowed momentum to swing away from them, and required a late rescue act to avoid another damaging defeat.

Early breakthrough fails to settle Spurs

There was at least an encouraging start for the visitors. Micky van de Ven, pushing forward at the right time, gave Tottenham the lead and briefly eased the tension. It should have been the platform for a confidence-building win, particularly with Spurs desperate for a response after last weekend’s defeat to West Ham that reportedly prompted internal discussions.

Instead, Tottenham failed to take control. The opening goal did not translate into authority, and Burnley grew in belief as Spurs repeatedly wasted promising situations and allowed the home side to push higher up the pitch.

Burnley’s response turns the screw

Burnley’s pressure eventually told, with Axel Tuanzebe playing a key role in dragging the contest back in their favour. Lyle Foster, too, became increasingly influential as the home side sensed a wobble, forcing Tottenham into hurried defending and scrappy clearances.

For long stretches after Tottenham’s opener, it was Burnley who looked more cohesive and more certain of what they were trying to do. Each wave of attacks ramped up the anxiety around the Spurs dugout, where Frank cut a visibly strained figure as the match slipped beyond his team’s control.

Romero delivers a lifeline at the death

Just as another defeat appeared inevitable, Romero popped up in the final moments with a crucial goal to spare Tottenham from the worst-case scenario. The Argentine’s late intervention provided respite — but not relief.

A draw at Burnley, especially one that required a last-gasp equaliser, is not the sort of result that shifts the narrative for a club in Tottenham’s position. The bigger picture remains bleak: Spurs have collected only two wins from their last 14 Premier League games, and the gap between the fanbase and the coaching staff appears to be widening by the week.

Frank now faces a familiar Premier League reality. When supporters begin to openly demand change, pragmatism and prior reputation count for little — and even a dramatic late goal can only delay the questions that are growing louder.
