Record audience for England's semi-final heartbreak
A peak audience of 24 million tuned in to watch England's dramatic 2-1 defeat by Argentina in the FIFA World Cup 2026 semi-final, making it the most-watched live television event in the UK in over five years.
The BBC One and iPlayer broadcast averaged 22.1 million viewers, with an additional 12.6 million streams on BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport website and app. The BBC Sport live coverage page attracted more than 24.6 million views globally, including 18.8 million in the UK.
Anthony Gordon gave England the lead early in the second half, but Enzo Fernández equalised for Argentina with five minutes remaining. Lautaro Martínez's stoppage-time header sealed a second consecutive World Cup final appearance for the defending champions.
"Last night may not have brought the result England fans were hoping for, but it was another occasion that united millions across the UK in support of the team," said BBC Director of Sport Alex Kay-Jelski. "The extraordinary reach of our coverage across TV, iPlayer, BBC Sounds, the BBC Sport website, app and socials reflects the enduring power of major sporting events to create shared experiences on a remarkable scale."
What comes next
England will face France in the third-place play-off on Saturday at 22:00 BST in Miami. The final between Argentina and Spain kicks off on Sunday at 20:00 BST in New Jersey. Both matches will be shown live on BBC One, iPlayer, and streamed on the BBC Sport website and app.
The semi-final's audience figures surpass any single live TV event since the Euro 2020 final between England and Italy, which peaked at a similar number. The result may have ended England's trophy hopes, but the nation's appetite for football's biggest stage remains undiminished.
