Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson has refused to be drawn on reports linking the club with a move for Fiorentina defender Matias Moreno.

Reports from Italy and Wales had suggested the Championship side had reached an agreement for the 22-year-old Argentine, who spent part of last season on loan at La Liga club Levante. However, Parkinson remained tight-lipped when questioned about the potential deal.

What did Parkinson say?

Speaking to BBC Sport Wales, Parkinson said: "I think if we end up signing every player we're linked with, we'd have about 40 players in the building just now."

From our point of view, we're concentrating on the lads we've got. This pre-season has been about focusing on the group we worked so hard to put together last year and getting them together as a group, and building on what we did last season and getting more out of every single player. At the moment, if the right player comes available and we feel they're going to enhance this group, then obviously we'll make a move.

The veteran boss emphasised that the bulk of their transfer business was conducted last year, and any new additions would need to be significant upgrades. "A lot of that work was done last season and if there are some additions, they'll be ones we feel can really improve us, obviously," he added.

Pre-season preparations

Wrexham are gearing up for their second consecutive campaign in the Championship after narrowly missing out on the play-offs in May. They began their pre-season with a 0-0 draw against Polish side Wisla Krakow last Saturday, where 22 players featured for 45 minutes each.

Parkinson explained the fitness-first approach: "When it is only a 45-minute game for the individuals, then we can train harder leading into it and then straight after when we get back, because there's not that need for the second day recovery."

Next up is a friendly against Manchester United at Helsinki's Olympic Stadium on Saturday, followed by a US tour where they will face Leeds United in Tampa and Liverpool in New York. Their final pre-season test is against Sunderland on 2 August.

With the squad in good physical shape and a clear focus on continuity, Parkinson appears in no rush to disrupt a settled group. Whether Moreno becomes part of that group remains to be seen.
