Arsenal's nervy 1-0 win over Newcastle on Saturday Night Football has prompted Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville to suggest the Gunners will need a 'wheelbarrow' to get over the line in the Premier League title race. Eberechi Eze's stunning first-half strike from a short corner proved decisive, lifting Mikel Arteta's side back to the top of the table with a three-point cushion over Manchester City.

Speaking on The Gary Neville Podcast, the former Manchester United captain described the atmosphere at the Emirates as 'edgy', with the weight of a 22-year league title drought pressing on both players and fans. 'You can feel the edginess. It's a crowd that haven't seen it for so long, or haven't seen it at all for a lot of them,' said Neville. 'If they get over the line, they're going to have to be wheelbarrowed over it. They're not going to sail over the line — it's going to be a real struggle.'

Defensive Solidity vs. Attacking Anxiety

While praising Arsenal's defensive organisation and work rate, Neville was critical of their attacking play. 'A lot of things they did in this game weren't great from a tactical point of view,' he said. 'They're very good defensively and they really work hard... but what you want is that expression, that freedom where they play forward, they run forward and they do things with a bit more certainty in their attacking play — and that didn't come at all today.'

Neville noted that aside from the set-piece goal, Arsenal created few clear chances in open play. 'They get the ball into the final third and then they recycle it quite safely at times. That's been a criticism of mine of them for a couple of years now.'

Short Corners Pay Off

Despite the attacking struggles, Neville credited Arsenal for sticking with their short-corner routine after initial groans from the crowd. 'I reckon 99 out of 100 teams, when your fans are groaning after the second one, you're playing it into the box on the third one, but they did it again,' he said. 'They were almost probing... and what they were trying to do is work out that space of how they got it to Kai Havertz and Eze was the key at the edge of the box. It's an exceptional finish.'

Eze's goal was his third in four games, and the England international is showing a 'swagger' according to Neville — a vital X-factor for a side that can sometimes appear constrained by fear.

No Prioritisation in Double Hunt

With Arsenal also in the Champions League semi-finals, facing Atletico Madrid on Wednesday, Neville insisted Arteta must not prioritise one competition over the other. 'There's going to be no prioritisation because they're in the two biggest competitions — you have to go for both,' he said. 'The only way this works for Arsenal is to keep momentum, keep winning and they have to somehow take the reins off, while the defensive balance stays in place.'

Neville added that the Premier League remains the more realistic target. 'I think there are better teams in there than them in the Champions League... but I do see them having a chance with the league.'

Key Takeaways

  • Nervy win: Arsenal beat Newcastle 1-0 via an Eberechi Eze wonder goal, moving three points clear at the top.
  • Neville's verdict: The Gunners lack attacking freedom and are 'strangled by fear' — they'll need a 'wheelbarrow' to win the title.
  • Set-piece persistence: Short-corner routine finally paid off after earlier groans, showcasing tactical discipline.
  • Double challenge: Arteta urged to go for both Premier League and Champions League without prioritisation.
  • Defensive base: Arsenal's compact shape and work rate remain their strongest title-winning asset.
