Manchester’s dynastic duo: Greig chases third crown
As the Manchester Thunder prepare for the Netball Super League Grand Final against London Pulse, one question is being asked across the city: could Karen Greig become Manchester’s most successful coach? With two titles already in her decade-long tenure, another victory at the Co-op Live Arena would see her match the trophy count of a certain Pep Guardiola at Manchester City—and spark an unusual cross-sport legacy debate.
Greig, who doubles as the Thunder’s director and CEO, has built a juggernaut since 2016. Her side lifted the crown in 2019 and 2022, the latter as part of an undefeated league campaign. Now they stand one win away from a third championship, on home soil, against the reigning champions.
The Guardiola comparison
“Pep probably was [the most successful], wasn't he? He left after 10 years,” Greig told Sky Sports with a smile. “But Manchester clubs this season have had a really, really successful year. [Manchester] City didn’t quite get over the line in the league, but they won a couple of trophies—the FA Cup—and the women also won in the league and the cup. So I’m like, come on, guys, we’ve got to get amongst that silverware—and hopefully we can.”
While Guardiola’s glittering reign at the Etihad yielded multiple Premier League titles and domestic cups, Greig’s dominance in the Netball Super League has been equally formidable. A third title from four Grand Final appearances would place her firmly alongside the Catalan as a Manchester icon—albeit in a different code.
Thunder’s road to the final
The Thunder have held the upper hand over Pulse this season, winning two of their three encounters. Their most recent meeting, the major semi-final, ended 60–56 in Thunder’s favour. That victory, combined with an unwavering home record, makes them narrow favourites for the showpiece.
Quick Facts
Thunder vs Pulse 2026 head-to-head: Thunder 2 wins, Pulse 1 win
Greig’s title history: Super League champion in 2019, 2022; unbeaten season in 2022
Venue: Co-op Live Arena, Manchester
Pep Guardiola at Man City: 5 Premier League titles, 2 FA Cups, 4 League Cups, 1 Champions League (as of 2026)
Pulse will provide stern test
Greig is wary of a resurgent Pulse, who rebounded from their semi-final defeat by dismantling Loughborough Lightning 60–56 in the Preliminary final. “That’s the best I’ve seen Pulse play for a long time this season,” she said. “They bought their A-game. I do think it’s going to be a game of chess.”
Pulse head coach Sam Bird, meanwhile, has backed her side to rise to the occasion. “When we’re on form—I’m backing us,” Bird declared. “If we can be nice and tidy and really respond well to the umpiring, not let the occasion overwhelm how we want to play, then I think it should be a cracking game.”
“I don’t think I’d be the most successful coach in Manchester, but hopefully we’ll add more to the legacy that our city brings.” — Karen Greig
