City Capture Charles in £500,000 Deal
Manchester City have completed the signing of England international left-back Niamh Charles from Chelsea for a fee of £500,000. The 27-year-old has put pen to paper on a three-year contract that will keep her at the Joie Stadium until 2029.
Charles, who started her career at Liverpool, made 173 appearances for Chelsea after joining in 2020. During six trophy-laden years in west London, she won five Women's Super League titles, four FA Cups and three League Cups. She was also part of the Chelsea side that reached the 2021 UEFA Women's Champions League final.
"I'm really happy to be here and I can't wait to get started," Charles said. "I've seen from the outside and have obviously played against City over the past few years, and they had great success this year. What they're building as a team, the players and the staff, it's something I wanted to be a part of."
A Statement of Intent from the Champions
The signing represents another bold move by City boss Andree Jeglertz, following the arrival of Beth Mead from Arsenal. Charles is expected to become the first-choice left-back after the summer departure of Leila Ouahabi, with Alex Greenwood likely to continue in her preferred central role.
Charles found regular starts hard to come by under Sonia Bompastor at Chelsea, managing just 23 league appearances across the last two seasons after three consecutive campaigns of 20-plus WSL outings under Emma Hayes. The addition of Katie McCabe to Chelsea's ranks would have further limited her chances, making the move to a club that can offer consistent game time an appealing proposition.
"It suits and fits me, the culture we're building and the style of play. I just think it's the perfect fit," Charles added. "I've got a few good friends here from past times and internationals. I've spoken to them about it and they feel they're improving every day as players in training and every game, and that is something I want to do."
