Chelsea dig deep to dodge the play-off
Chelsea arrived in Naples with the pressure unmistakable: win and book a direct route into the Champions League last 16, slip up and face the nuisance of a two-legged play-off. For 45 minutes, the worst-case scenario looked increasingly plausible.
Napoli, buoyed by a roaring Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, went in front through Rasmus Højlund, leaving Chelsea trailing at the interval and once again fielding questions about whether their youthful group could manage the tournament’s sharpest moments away from home.
The visitors did respond after the break. Enzo Fernández levelled from the penalty spot, briefly swinging the mood back towards the travelling support, but Napoli hit back to cancel that out and restore their advantage. At that stage, the tie felt like it was tilting decisively towards Antonio Conte’s side, with Chelsea staring at another squandered lead and a longer route through the competition.
Palmer changes everything
Chelsea’s night turned on a substitution. Cole Palmer emerged from the bench and immediately injected purpose, speed and clarity into the final third. With Napoli stretched and increasingly vulnerable, Palmer’s influence became decisive — not through a single headline strike, but through the kind of chance creation that changes a match’s rhythm.
Palmer twice picked the lock, supplying João Pedro for two exceptional finishes that flipped the contest on its head. The Brazilian’s first was struck with conviction and precision, the second delivered with the composure of a forward in complete control, puncturing Napoli’s belief and silencing a stadium that had sensed a famous European night.
For Chelsea, the payoff was significant. The late surge delivered their first away win at this level in more than three years and, crucially, lifted them into the top eight — enough to bypass the play-off round and move directly into the last 16.
Conte’s European frustration deepens
While Chelsea celebrated a timely statement performance, Napoli were left with a grim post-mortem. The defeat amounted to a bruising early exit and another disappointing continental chapter for Conte, a coach whose domestic successes have too often been followed by frustration on the European stage.
With Napoli described as depleted, Conte could only watch as his side lost control in the closing stages, undone by Palmer’s burst of quality and João Pedro’s ruthless end product.
Chelsea, guided on the touchline by Liam Rosenior, will take particular encouragement from how they finished: under stress, behind on the night, and still able to find solutions. In Naples, they not only avoided extra fixtures — they rediscovered their edge when it mattered most.
