Brazilian midfielder to undergo medical on Thursday after leaving Wolves camp
Joao Gomes is on the verge of a £38m move to Aston Villa from relegated Wolves, with the midfielder set to have a medical on Thursday after leaving the club's training camp in Portugal.
The deal is worth an initial £34m plus a further £4m in add-ons, as Villa move quickly to bolster their midfield options following the departure of Youri Tielemans to Manchester United and the long-term injury to Amadou Onana.
Midfield rebuild at Villa Park
Tielemans left for £35m earlier this summer, while Onana faces a lengthy spell out after sustaining a serious knee injury while representing Belgium at the World Cup. Those setbacks forced Villa to accelerate plans to reinforce their engine room, and Gomes has emerged as a primary target.
Atletico Madrid had also shown interest in the 24-year-old, but failed to finalise a deal, clearing the path for Villa to swoop. In addition to Gomes, Villa are close to completing the signing of Switzerland international Johan Manzambi for a club record fee of over £50m from Freiburg.
Gomes’ Wolves stint ends after relegation
Gomes joined Wolves from Flamengo in 2023 and went on to make 130 appearances across three seasons, scoring seven goals. Last term, he featured 41 times in the Premier League but could not prevent Wolves finishing bottom and dropping into the Championship.
The Brazilian’s only goal of the 2025/26 campaign came against Aston Villa, coincidentally the club he now looks set to join. A medical is scheduled for Thursday, with personal terms expected to be a formality.
