Captain Bowen pledges loyalty after demotion
Jarrod Bowen has declared he will stay at West Ham United despite their relegation to the Championship, committing himself to leading the club back to the Premier League.
The 29-year-old forward, who attracted interest from top-flight sides following the Hammers' drop on the final day of the season, held talks with majority shareholder Daniel Křetínský in Prague this summer and emerged determined to spearhead a promotion push.
"I feel like we're moving in the right direction as a club," Bowen told West Ham's media channels. "There's a lot of thinking time over the summer and a lot of things that go in your head. But I look in years and years to come of when I retire, what's going to bring me the most happiness. For me now that's getting this club back into the Premier League."
A blow and a boost
Relegation has already seen Mateus Fernandes depart for Tottenham Hotspur in an £85m deal, while winger Crysencio Summerville is a target for Manchester United. Bowen's decision, however, provides a major lift for new manager and the fanbase.
Since arriving from Hull City for £22m in January 2020, Bowen has made 280 appearances, scoring 85 goals. He signed a new seven-year contract in October 2023 and was named captain in 2024 following Kurt Zouma's exit.
Missed World Cup, eyes club redemption
Despite 22 caps for England, Bowen was left out of Thomas Tuchel's squad for the 2026 World Cup. Now he appears driven to channel that disappointment into resurrecting West Ham's top-flight status.
The club's rebuild will be headquartered in the Championship for the first time since 2012, but with their captain fully on board, the path back looks clearer.
