Hollie Doyle has identified Opera Ballo as the principal danger to Bow Echo ahead of Wednesday’s Visit Qatar Sussex Stakes at the Qatar Goodwood Festival, arguing the Godolphin runner’s front-running style could be ideally suited to Goodwood.
In her latest column for Sky Sports, Doyle said Bow Echo is “difficult to oppose” as he puts an unbeaten record on the line, but warned Opera Ballo “could prove hard to peg back” around a track she believes favours pace-setters.

Doyle’s view is that Bow Echo arrives at Goodwood with the clearest top-level profile in the field after landing the Guineas and then following up in the St James’ Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot last month, form that makes George Boughey’s colt the one the rest have to beat.
However, the jockey’s main caveat is stylistic: Opera Ballo’s ability to get into a rhythm on the front end could turn the race into a different kind of test. Doyle’s assessment is that Goodwood is “better suited to front runners like him”, making the Charlie Appleby-trained colt a live opponent if he controls the tempo from an early stage.

She also references a smooth Sandown success over Field Of Gold and subsequent Summer Mile winner Zeus Olympios, a line of form that underlines Opera Ballo’s ability to travel strongly and finish the job when he gets his own way.
In a race often decided by fractions—positioning, pace and when the leaders commit—Doyle’s warning is essentially tactical: if Opera Ballo is allowed to stride and dictate, he could make it difficult for closers to reel him in on the turns.
Doyle also mentions Aidan O’Brien’s Gstaad, who chased Bow Echo home at the Royal Meeting, describing him as a “street fighter” but suggesting he may lack the turn of foot required to trouble the favourite on the Downs.
