Holders St Mirren began the defence of the Premier Sports Cup with a comfortable 4-0 win over Dumbarton, while Linlithgow Rose caused a major upset by defeating second-tier Greenock Morton.
St Mirren cruise past Dumbarton
The Buddies were in control from early on at the SMISA Stadium, with debutant Samuel Ramos opening the scoring with a near-post finish. Fellow debutant Chris Mochrie doubled the lead after robbing Dumbarton's trialist goalkeeper, and Ramos netted his second before half-time. Thomas Falconer added a fourth with a delicate chip to seal a dominant victory.
St Mirren are aiming to become the first club to retain the trophy since Celtic in 2019, and this performance underlined their credentials.
Linlithgow Rose stun Morton
In one of the shocks of the round, Lowland League champions Linlithgow Rose travelled to Cappielow and emerged with a historic victory against Championship side Greenock Morton. The result sent shockwaves through the tournament and highlighted the giant-killing potential of the early rounds.
Other notable results
Scottish Cup finalists Dunfermline Athletic were humbled by third-tier East Kilbride, while Dundee came from behind twice to beat Airdrieonians. Falkirk thumped Edinburgh City, and Dundee United needed a stoppage-time penalty to edge past Stirling Albion.
In Group A, Queen's Park beat Brora Rangers 3-1, and Kelty Hearts took a bonus point after a draw with Queen of the South. Ross County cruised to a 4-1 win at Annan Athletic, and Partick Thistle thrashed Highland League side Rothes.
All 12 Premiership sides were in action across the groups, with only a handful of shocks troubling the top-flight contingent.
