Incoming Boss
Hearts are on the verge of appointing Wouter Vrancken as their new head coach. The 47-year-old Belgian is expected to be confirmed as Derek McInnes' successor at Hearts within days. Vrancken arrives after a highly successful spell at Sint-Truiden, where he guided the Limburg club to third place in the Belgian Pro League – their best finish for 60 years – and secured European qualification.
Hearts moved quickly to secure their top target after an extensive recruitment process led by sporting director Graeme Jones and chairman Calum Paterson. Vrancken was identified following input from investor Tony Bloom's Jamestown Analytics and stood out among a strong field that included former AZ Alkmaar boss Maarten Martens and ex-Feyenoord and Manchester United coach Rene Hake.
Why Vrancken?
Vrancken brings substantial managerial experience, having overseen more than 300 matches across spells with Lommel, Mechelen, Genk, Gent, and Sint-Truiden. His silverware includes the Belgian Cup with Mechelen in 2019, and he was named Manager of the Year after leading Genk to a second-place finish in the Pro League. Known for an attacking, high-pressing style, he fits the profile Hearts sought to build on last season's agonising runner-up finish behind Celtic in the Scottish Premiership.
The Belgian's data-driven approach aligned with the club's analytics model, making him the standout candidate. His ability to develop young talent and navigate European qualifiers also proved decisive.
The Task Ahead
Vrancken inherits a Hearts squad that must immediately focus on the Champions League second qualifying round tie against Sturm Graz. The first leg is in Austria on July 22, with the return at Tynecastle seven days later. The new boss will then prepare for the Premiership opener away to Aberdeen on August 1, live on Sky Sports.
He faces a squad in transition. Top scorer Lawrence Shankland left for Rangers, and former manager McInnes followed him to Glasgow. However, Hearts have been proactive in the transfer market, signing six new players including Calvin Miller and Josh McPake, while making Stuart Findlay's loan from Oxford United permanent. The squad returns for pre-season training later this week, and the club hopes Vrancken will be in place to lead those sessions.
