Mind Games from the Norwegian Goal Machine
Norway's Erling Haaland has never been one to shy away from a psychological battle, and ahead of Saturday's World Cup quarter-final against England, the striker has firmly placed the weight of expectation on the Three Lions. Speaking to media in Fort Lauderdale, Haaland was unequivocal when asked if the pressure was all on England.
"Yeah," he replied. Pushed on whether Norway could take advantage, he added: "Yeah, definitely."
Haaland, who has lit up the tournament with seven goals in four matches—including a brace in the last-16 win over Brazil—suggested that Norway remain underdogs despite their sensational form.
"I think there are some clear favourites out there. England are one of them, so I think all of you should put every single pressure on the English lads," he said with a smile.
The Manchester City forward also couldn't resist a reference to his famous "stay humble" remark aimed at Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta last season. When asked if England fans should stay humble, Haaland responded:
"I think everyone should stay humble but they should be confident of progressing, definitely."
Norway's Unexpected Journey
Few expected Norway to reach the last eight, and Haaland himself confessed that their progress has come as a surprise.
"I didn't expect this at all. Even before the first game I didn't expect it, and now I didn't expect it. To be honest, to be in the quarter-finals with Norway in the World Cup, it's quite surprising even for me,"the 25-year-old admitted.
Having already dispatched Brazil, a nation with five World Cup titles to its name, Haaland acknowledged the magnitude of the opportunity.
"Playing against Brazil was kind of crazy for us Norwegians and to win against Brazil, then go and play England in a quarter-final in the USA, is quite special. And I think if you watch the scenes back in Norway, this is not normal for Norway to be here."
A Personal Battle for Haaland
Born in Leeds during his father Alf-Inge Haaland's time at Elland Road, Haaland has a deep personal connection to England. He admitted the fixture holds extra meaning.
"It's a special game, definitely. I think for me, it's super special because I play in England and I'm born in England, and you also play against teammates and everything. So it's a bit … not weird, but it's a funny game and it's going to be nice."
Despite the high stakes, Haaland stressed the importance of enjoying the moment.
"It's a key for my daily life to train well, focus well and prepare well, but you also need to enjoy the moment and that's what we've been doing now. And as we play in the World Cup we just have to enjoy it because nothing lasts forever, and we have to just enjoy while we're here."
