Nottingham Forest rue a night of missed chances in Portugal
Nottingham Forest’s long-awaited return to European football left more questions than celebrations on Thursday night, as a scrappy performance and a costly sequence of errors condemned them to a narrow defeat at Braga.
Forest arrived in northern Portugal hoping to turn their first continental campaign in almost three decades into a memorable adventure. Instead, they were left to digest a match defined by a lack of fluency, a glaring moment of misfortune from their captain, and a key miss from the penalty spot.
Away end frustration grows
The build-up felt dramatic even before the football started. Heavy rain lashed the city in the hours leading up to kick-off and briefly raised concerns among the 2,100 travelling fans that the game could be disrupted. The weather eventually eased, inspections were avoided and the contest went ahead in the striking bowl of Braga’s stadium.
Forest’s support was there in force again — including hundreds who reportedly travelled without tickets — but their vocal backing soon turned into pointed criticism. As the visitors struggled to build rhythm, a section of the away end made their displeasure clear, jeering the team at intervals and mocking the sideways passing with a chant of: “Sideways and backwards, everywhere we go.”
The decisive moment: errors and an own goal
Forest’s problems were summed up by the passage of play that led to the only goal of the game. A chain of mistakes culminated in captain Ryan Yates inadvertently turning the ball into his own net, handing Braga an advantage that proved decisive.
The goal felt emblematic of an evening where Forest repeatedly looked a yard off the pace and short on sharpness in key areas. Rather than asserting control, they found themselves reacting — second to loose balls, slow to transitions and unable to sustain pressure long enough to truly pin Braga back.
Gibbs-White’s penalty miss compounds the damage
Forest did have a route back into the contest, but Morgan Gibbs-White failed to convert from the spot, a moment that drained belief from the visitors and lifted the home crowd.
In tight European away fixtures, margins are everything. Forest were afforded an opening to escape with at least a point, but the miss ensured Braga’s lead remained intact and left the Premier League side chasing without the calmness or cohesion required to force an equaliser.
Dyche feels the heat
The defeat also sharpened the scrutiny on manager Sean Dyche, who cut a notably different figure on the touchline — swapping his usual shorts for a full Forest tracksuit amid the wet conditions. More significantly, the mood among supporters suggested patience is already being tested as the league-phase schedule reaches its conclusion.
Forest’s fans travelled hoping this would not be their final European trip of the season. After a performance low on invention and high on self-inflicted damage, their prospects now feel far less secure — and their margin for error has all but disappeared.
