PFA Pre-Season Camp Returns to Combat Free Agency Uncertainty

The PFA's pre-season training camp has returned for its third year, offering out-of-contract players a vital lifeline as they search for their next clubs. The fully-funded residential programme, held at Champneys Springs in Leicestershire, has been extended from 10 to 12 weeks this summer and will for the first time include players from the Women's Super League and Championship.

Since its launch in 2024, the camp has helped numerous professionals maintain fitness and sharpness during the difficult free agency period. Last year, attendees included John Swift, who later signed for Portsmouth, and goalkeeper Angus Gunn, who joined Nottingham Forest and went on to represent Scotland at the World Cup.

Sky Sports visited the camp again to speak with six players – Fernando Forestieri, Jonny Williams, Will Keane, Kyle Vassell, Marvin Johnson and Tom McIntyre – all hungry for a new chapter.

Forestieri Eyes England Return After Exotic Sojourn

Former Sheffield Wednesday forward Fernando Forestieri is targeting a comeback to English football after stints in Italy, Malaysia and Cyprus. The 36-year-old, a free agent for the first time, insists he has plenty left to offer.

"This is my first time being a free agent. I'm 36 and I understand the situation, but the more important thing is that I feel so good to keep playing,” Forestieri told Sky Sports. "It was different. I had very good experiences, but you realise how much you miss English football. Now it's time to come back."

Forestieri, who lives in London with his family and expects a new arrival in August, has also started his coaching badges. His incredible spell at Malaysian club Johor Darul Ta'zim yielded 50 goals in 72 appearances and 10 trophies, but he remains realistic about his next move.

"It's not because I was too good, it's because I was at the best club in the country. Some players go with the wrong mentality and think it's easy, but it is not easy. You have to push yourself."

Williams Seeks Stability and Leadership Role

Wales international Jonny Williams left Gillingham this summer after three seasons – the longest stop of his career since his decade at Crystal Palace. Now 32, the midfielder is relishing the chance to emulate the veteran pros who guided him in south London.

"I'm blessed PFA pre-season only started three years ago and the timing is perfect for me. Otherwise, I'd just be training at home in Kent on my own,” Williams said. "I was so fortunate when I was young to have the leadership group at Palace with the likes of Paddy McCarthy, Mile Jedinak – top senior pros. I'm stepping into that region where I will be that figure for younger players."

Williams admitted his time at Gillingham was tough, with high expectations unfulfilled. "To be honest, I think I needed a change and the change has come at the right time. I'm excited to think, wherever I go, I can help that team and help people around me."

More Experience on Show as Camp Welcomes Women's Game

Alongside Forestieri and Williams, the camp features a host of seasoned Football League campaigners. Will Keane, the former Preston North End striker, is searching for a new club after his release, while Kyle Vassell, Marvin Johnson and Tom McIntyre are all using the facility to stay match-ready.

The 2026 edition also marks a significant expansion with the inclusion of WSL and Championship players for the first time, underlining the PFA's commitment to supporting professionals across the game. With the camp now running for 12 weeks, more than 40 out-of-contract players are expected to benefit before the new season begins.
