Road to the semi-finals
Both teams have navigated tricky paths to reach the last four. England topped Group L with wins over Croatia (4-2) and Panama (2-0), and a draw against Ghana. They then edged DR Congo 2-1 in the last 32, beat Mexico 3-2 in the last 16, and needed extra time to see off Norway 2-1 in the quarter-finals, with Jude Bellingham scoring the winner.
Argentina cruised through Group J, beating Algeria (3-0), Austria (2-0) and Jordan (3-1). A 3-2 extra-time victory over Cape Verde in the last 32 was followed by a 3-2 win against Egypt in the last 16. In the quarter-finals, Julián Álvarez's extra-time stunner sank 10-man Switzerland 3-1.
Historical baggage: a rivalry like no other
Few international fixtures carry such deep cultural and historical weight. Born from British influence over Argentine football in the 19th century, the relationship curdled through nationalism and conflict. The 1966 World Cup quarter-final, won by England, was a catalyst; the 1986 'Hand of God' match after the Falklands War cemented the enmity. Yet the two sides haven't met in over twenty years, preserving the romance of the animosity.
Head-to-head in FIFA World Cup meetings:
- 1962: England 3-1 Argentina (group stage)
- 1966: England 1-0 Argentina (quarter-final)
- 1986: Argentina 2-1 England (quarter-final)
- 1998: Argentina 2-2 England (Argentina won on penalties, last 16)
- 2002: Argentina 0-1 England (group stage)
What the managers say
"I saw somewhere on the internet the incredibly valid point that this England team aren’t actually scarred with memories of bad days against Argentina," one fan noted. "Even old man Jordan Henderson was -4 years old for the Hand of God. Us oldie fans however..."
England manager Thomas Tuchel acknowledged the weight of history surrounding this fixture. "Argentina will be fuelled by history – but we are ready," he said. England have practiced penalties in every training session since the tournament began, responding to past shoot-out heartaches.
