Player Discontent Emerges After Semi-Final Collapse
A number of England players were left bemused by Thomas Tuchel's defensive substitutions in their 2-1 World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina, Sky Sports News understands. Senior figures inside the camp felt the changes hindered rather than helped their chances of reaching the final.
After Anthony Gordon gave England the lead in the 55th minute, Tuchel opted to bring on Ezri Konsa for the goalscorer and switch to a back five with more than half an hour remaining. Ten minutes later, Declan Rice – who had been struggling with illness – was replaced by Nico O'Reilly, leaving England with six defenders, four of them centre-backs.
Tuchel’s Substitutions Under Scrutiny
Those with reservations believe the changes left England without an outlet. With Harry Kane dropping deep to defend, there was no one to hold the ball up or run the flanks, inviting relentless pressure from Lionel Messi and Argentina.
The approach appeared to backfire spectacularly. Between Gordon's goal and Lautaro Martinez's stoppage-time winner, England had just 12% possession. Late strikes from Enzo Fernandez and Martinez completed the turnaround.
“Even though I haven't had a chance to review the game, I think the problem is systemic in English football – the players aren't able to maintain possession under pressure,” Tuchel said after the match.
No Rift, But Questions Remain
Despite the discontent, there is no suggestion of a rift in the squad. Tuchel remains popular and retains the full backing of the FA. He has vowed to stay “100 per cent” committed for Euro 2028, where England will co-host.
Yet the manner of the defeat – and Tuchel's post-match comments about English football's DNA – have raised uncomfortable questions. With home advantage in two years, the debate over whether his pragmatic approach can deliver silverware is set to intensify.
