Charlton seize control after early red card
Charlton Athletic made light work of a turbulent Leicester City on Tuesday night, striking twice in the first half to claim a 2-0 win at the King Power Stadium and deepen the misery for interim boss Andy King.
With the club still reeling from the dismissal of Martí Cifuentes on Sunday, Leicester’s owner Aiyawatt “Top” Srivaddhanaprabha watched on as King took charge of his first match at home. But any hopes of a new-manager bounce evaporated within 15 minutes.
Okoli dismissed as Leicester’s night unravels
Centre-back Caleb Okoli was shown a straight red card for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity after hauling down Miles Leaburn, who had burst clear following Sonny Carey’s clever flick. Referee Andrew Kitchen had little hesitation in sending Okoli off, leaving Leicester to play the vast majority of the contest with 10 men.
Charlton immediately looked the more coherent side, circulating the ball with confidence and forcing Leicester into defensive reshuffles that disrupted their shape. The visitors’ advantage in numbers soon translated into a tangible advantage on the scoreboard.
Carey and Dykes do the damage before the break
Charlton’s opening goal arrived in the first half as Carey, already influential in the build-up, found the net to give the London side a deserved lead. Leicester, short-handed and still adjusting to life under interim stewardship, struggled to find rhythm or control in midfield.
The visitors doubled their advantage before half-time through Lyndon Dykes, who continued his strong form with a finish that gave Charlton a commanding cushion heading into the interval.
Leicester’s uphill battle under interim leadership
Even with home support behind them, Leicester lacked the cohesion required to mount a sustained response. The red card forced tactical compromises, while Charlton’s organisation allowed them to manage the game intelligently and limit Leicester’s threat.
For King, it was a sobering first outing in front of the King Power crowd. For Charlton, it was a disciplined away performance built on intensity, opportunism and the ability to take control when the moment arrived.
