Craig Gordon has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 43, ending a remarkable 25-year career that saw him overcome multiple career-threatening injuries to amass over 760 appearances and 15 major honours.
The goalkeeper's journey began at Hearts, where he debuted in 2001 and quickly established himself as one of Scotland's brightest talents. By 24, he was the youngest inductee into Hearts' Hall of Fame (2007), already a Scottish Cup winner in 2005/06, and on his way to 84 international caps for Scotland.

Gordon's performances earned him a £9m transfer to Sunderland in 2007 – a British-record fee for a goalkeeper at the time. In 2010, his incredible reflex save against Bolton Wanderers was voted the best save in Premier League history, cementing his reputation as a shot-stopper of the highest calibre.

Overcoming adversity twice
Gordon's career was defined as much by his comebacks as his trophies. Ankle problems, broken arms, and knee surgery ruined his Sunderland spell, leading to a two-year period out of the game from 2012 where he was unable to walk pain-free. He turned to coaching while fighting a career-threatening condition, but defied medical opinion to return.
Signing for Celtic in 2014, he rebuilt his career spectacularly, winning six Scottish Premiership crowns, five League Cups, and three Scottish Cups. After his Celtic contract expired, he rejoined Hearts and continued to perform at a high level until another devastating setback – a double leg break on Christmas Eve 2022.
Once again, Gordon fought back. After surgery, he returned to action for Hearts and even made Scotland’s squad for the recent World Cup at 43, playing a part in their campaign.
