When Chelsea paid £17m for teenage goalkeeper Mike Penders from Genk in 2024, many eyebrows were raised—not least at the Belgian club. "We thought it was crazy," former Genk goalkeeper coach Gilbert Roex admitted. But Chelsea's scouting department, led by head of goalkeeping Ben Roberts, had identified a gem cut from the same cloth as Thibaut Courtois.
The Courtois blueprint repeated
Like Courtois, Penders was plucked from Genk's youth system before making a senior appearance for the club. Roex explained: "He was still playing for Jong Genk in the second division when Chelsea's scouts became convinced. It was similar to Courtois." The legendary Belgian goalkeeper had only one full season at Genk before Chelsea swooped in, and later became one of the world's best. Penders' trajectory is now following a familiar path—including a recent World Cup training stint alongside Courtois, who was reportedly "very impressed" with the youngster.
From footwork weakness to standout asset
When Roex first scouted Penders at 13, his ball-playing ability was a glaring weakness. "His feet were terrible because he was so tall," Roex recalled. But through an "unbelievable mentality" and relentless work, Penders transformed into one of Europe's most progressive goalkeepers. On loan at Strasbourg last season, no goalkeeper in Europe's top five leagues registered a higher average position from goal, underlying his importance in build-up play under manager Liam Rosenior.

Penders made the most of a demanding 52-match season in France, reaching the semi-finals of both the Coupe de France and the Conference League. Now back at Chelsea, he is expected to provide serious competition for current number one Robert Sanchez. With Filip Jorgensen seeking an exit after failing to unseat Sanchez, Penders is effectively drafted in as the new challenger. Chelsea are also exploring a third goalkeeping option, with American Gabriel Slonina trialling at partner club Strasbourg.
What the future holds
For now, the plan is clear: Sanchez remains the starter, but Penders is breathing down his neck. Roex believes the Belgian has the tools to succeed: "I have never seen a player improve so quickly between the ages of 13 and 18." With his height, reflexes, newfound foot skills, and an "inability to feel pressure," Penders could soon make the jump from prospect to Premier League number one—just like Courtois before him.
