Cesc Fabregas rejected an approach from Napoli before the Serie A club appointed Massimiliano Allegri as their new head coach, according to Como president Mirwan Suwarso.
The Spanish coach, who has been central to Como's rise from Serie A obscurity to the Champions League, turned down three Italian clubs in recent months. Fabregas opted to continue building the ambitious project at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia.
"Several clubs have already asked about him, at least three in recent months, but he has refused," Suwarso told La Stampa. "One of them was Napoli, as had already been written in some local newspapers. The other two? One is Italian, but I won’t say anything else."
Napoli had been searching for a successor to Luciano Spalletti and identified Fabregas as a prime candidate after his impressive work in Lombardy. However, with the former Arsenal and Barcelona midfielder committed to Como, the Partenopei turned to Allegri, who was appointed earlier this summer.
Fabregas, 39, took over as Como head coach in November 2024 and masterminded back-to-back promotions, culminating in a top-four finish that secured direct qualification for the Champions League group stage. His tactical acumen and man-management have drawn widespread admiration.
The coach had previously been linked with the Inter Milan job in 2025 before Cristian Chivu was chosen, and his decision to stay at Como underscores the trust he has in the club’s ownership and vision.
For Napoli, the rejection continues a challenging summer of transition after missing out on the Scudetto for the third consecutive season. Allegri’s arrival signals a shift toward experience, but Fabregas’s snub highlights the competitive market for top coaching talent.
