Sutton's Stark Warning
Former Celtic striker and pundit Chris Sutton has delivered a blunt assessment of the club's transfer needs, insisting that an outlay of over £50 million is required this summer to keep them ahead of domestic rivals and competitive in Europe.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Sutton highlighted the narrow escape in last season's title race and the looming threat of key player departures as reasons for a major squad rebuild under manager Martin O'Neill.
Last Season's Rollercoaster
O'Neill led Celtic to a Premiership and Scottish Cup double in 2025/26, but the campaign was far from straightforward. They were "just minutes away from being pipped to the title by Hearts," with managerial turnover and supporter protests over recruitment creating a fractured environment.
Sutton praised O'Neill's achievement:
"Martin worked wonders last season. I didn't see Celtic winning the title from the position which he was put in on a couple of occasions. The run towards the end of the season was extraordinary."Yet, he believes the underlying issues remain unresolved.
Exodus Fear and Recruitment Urgency
With Reo Hatate, Daizen Maeda, and Arne Engels all linked with moves away, Sutton fears the squad could be hollowed out.
"It'll be interesting to see who goes out from Celtic. Who are Celtic going to replace those type of players with? I think that Celtic are possibly going to have to spend up to or more than £50m really because the squad does need a rebuild."
With the new Scottish Premiership season kicking off on August 3 against Dundee, and the first Old Firm clash against Rangers on September 20, time is of the essence.
Champions League Return Non-Negotiable
Before domestic duties intensify, Celtic face a crucial Champions League play-off tie on August 18/19. Last season's penalty shootout defeat to Kairat Almaty still stings, and Sutton sees qualification as vital for financial and morale reasons.
"That Champions League qualifier is absolutely massive for Celtic. It can change the mood in and around the club. You get through that into the Champions League and the supporters will be delighted. You don't get through and then the old misery will start again."
Sutton's overall verdict is clear: without significant investment, Celtic risk falling short both at home and abroad.
