England's World Cup preparations hit by Livramento injury

England's 2026 World Cup campaign has suffered an early setback with defender Tino Livramento ruled out of the tournament after sustaining a calf injury in training. The injury occurred on the eve of England's opening Group L match against Croatia, forcing manager Thomas Tuchel to call up a replacement from outside the original squad.

Tuchel opts for Chalobah, ignoring Alexander-Arnold's availability

In a move that has reignited debate over his selection policy, Tuchel has drafted in Chelsea's versatile defender Trevor Chalobah to fill the void, bypassing Real Madrid star Trent Alexander-Arnold. The decision has drawn sharp focus given Alexander-Arnold's reputation as one of the world's most creative full-backs—a player Tuchel controversially left out of his initial 26-man squad for the tournament in North America.

Carragher's assessment: 'He's looking at the negatives'

Former Liverpool defender and now Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher admitted he was "not surprised" by Tuchel's choice, pointing to the German manager's well-documented concerns over Alexander-Arnold's defensive work.

"We know Thomas Tuchel's stance regarding Trent," Carragher told Sky Sports. "When you look at some of the players in the squad, it looks as though he's picking centre-backs who can do a job at right-back rather than out-and-out right-backs. We know there's the special qualities that Trent Alexander-Arnold has. That's why Real Madrid wanted him. The reason why Liverpool supporters were so upset to lose him. The qualities Trent has, and maybe the deficiencies is maybe why Tuchel hasn't picked him. He's looking at the negatives instead of the positives."

Carragher added that Tuchel's tactical system may not amplify Alexander-Arnold's strengths the way Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool did, and that the manager is prioritizing "team harmony, togetherness and spirit over quality and talent."

Maguire also overlooked; comments may have backfired

The injury replacement conundrum also briefly raised the possibility of a recall for experienced centre-back Harry Maguire, who similarly missed the initial cut. Maguire publicly expressed his shock in a now-deleted social media post, later detailing an awkward FaceTime call with Tuchel on The Rest of Football podcast.

"I thought I did enough to be in the squad. I thought I could have helped the lads out there. I thought I would still have had a part to play on the pitch, and off the pitch as well," Maguire said, adding that Tuchel "really said that he can't really give me an excuse."

However, Carragher believes Maguire's candid remarks may have further damaged his chances. "Having seen Maguire's comments over the last couple of days, that's understandable," he said, before explaining that Chalobah's ability to cover both centre-back and right-back made him a more practical choice than a traditional centre-half like Maguire.
