Women's Super League newcomers Birmingham City have confirmed the signing of Canadian defender Marie Levasseur from Montpellier. The 29-year-old becomes the Blues' fourth addition this week as they gear up for their return to the top flight.
Levasseur's path to St Andrew's
Levasseur arrives with a solid CV that includes 63 appearances across three Ligue 1 Féminine campaigns for Montpellier. Before her French stint, the centre-back represented FC Fleury, Metz, and Finnish side ONS Oulu, while also honing her game at the University of Memphis in the United States.
On the international stage, she has earned 18 caps for Canada, making her senior debut in 2015 and progressing through the youth ranks. Her experience will be vital for a Birmingham side looking to establish themselves in the WSL.
Levasseur's ambition
Speaking after the announcement, the defender made it clear that the WSL has long been a target.
“I've always wanted to play in the WSL. I think it's one of the best leagues nowadays on the women's side,” Levasseur said. “I've heard about the project that the women's side are doing and, talking with the coach and the staff, I feel like the team identity really speaks to me.”
Merricks' seal of approval
Birmingham manager Amy Merricks was equally effusive about the signing, highlighting the defender's determination.
“Marie's mentality really stood out throughout the recruitment process,” Merricks said. “She wanted to challenge herself. She believed in what we're building and she was excited by the opportunity to be part of this next chapter. She fits the identity we're building and we're excited to see the impact she'll make.”
Levasseur joins Jade Rastocle, Millie Turner, and Lisa Naalsund in a flurry of early July business as Birmingham City build for the new campaign.
