Loughnane Continues Red-Hot Streak

Billy Loughnane’ s extraordinary season reached new heights at Newmarket on Saturday as the 20-year-old jockey steered Comanche Brave to a commanding success in the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai July Cup Stakes. The 11-1 shot, trained by Donnacha O’ Brien, travelled sweetly throughout the six-furlong Group 1 before quickening clear in the final furlong to defeat Venetian Sun by a length, with Japanese raider Satono Reve a further neck back in third.

Comanche Brave’ s victory added a fifth career win and a second Group 1 for Loughnane in 2026, after his 2000 Guineas triumph earlier in the campaign. The rider, who celebrated his 20th birthday only weeks ago, continues to cement his status as one of the sport’ s brightest young talents.

Winning margin: 1 length

Starting price: 11-1

Trainer: Donnacha O’ Brien

Track: Newmarket (July Course)

Group 1 wins for Loughnane in 2026: 2 (2000 Guineas, July Cup)

How the Race Unfolded

Satono Reve, attempting to become the first Japanese winner of the July Cup since Agnes World in 2000, went straight to the lead under Yuga Kawada. Aidan O’ Brien’ s Mission Central also raced prominently, ensuring a solid early tempo. Loughnane anchored Comanche Brave in a perfect stalking position, tracking the pacesetter on the stands’ side.

As the field hit the rising ground, Loughnane angled out and asked his mount to pick up. Comanche Brave responded instantly, hitting the front a furlong out and staying on strongly to the line. Venetian Sun finished with a flourish for second, but the winner was always holding him.

Winning Connections React

Trainer Donnacha O’ Brien was full of praise for horse and rider after the race:

He was very impressive today I thought – he looked like he did the day he won at the Curragh. There’ s not much between these sprinters and he’ d won a Group Two, so where else to go but keep trying to win Group Ones? He never looked anything but the winner really. He never looked in trouble, it was an easy watch.

O’ Brien also reflected on the horse’ s previous trip to Hong Kong, where he finished a creditable fourth behind Ka Ying Rising in the Chairman’ s Sprint Prize. “ It would be great to see a horse like Ka Ying Rising travel and come and take us on here,” he added.

Loughnane’ s Dream Ride

Loughnane, who picked up the ride through his agent Tony Hind, described it as a “ fantastic spare ride” that couldn’ t have gone better.

The race today couldn’ t have gone any better. I got on the back of the Japanese horse who was a perfect target and my one instruction was just to nurse him as long as I could. I managed to wait until the furlong pole and he picked up well from there. He travelled so sweetly, fast ground was perfect and I do think he could drop back in trip – I was taking back the whole way through and he’ s got a lot of gears this horse. Hopefully the sky’ s the limit.

The jockey already has three Group 1 wins on English soil this year and shows no sign of slowing down. “ To ride three Group One winners in England this year is brilliant and we’ re only halfway through the season,” he said.

What Next for Comanche Brave?

O’ Brien confirmed that Comanche Brave will continue to target the highest level, with the Haydock Sprint Cup (Group 1) on the agenda. A return to five furlongs is not out of the question, given how keenly the horse travelled. Longer-term, international travel beckons again, with O’ Brien keen to showcase his star on the global stage.

The performance reinforced the strength of the sprinting division on both sides of the Irish Sea and left punters dreaming of future clashes with the world’ s best.
