The incident occurred immediately after the final whistle in Atlanta, with Barco—who did not play in the game—running onto the pitch to celebrate with teammates near the visibly frustrated England midfielder. Footage later showed that Barco had also sprinted onto the field after Enzo Fernandez's 85th-minute equaliser, celebrating provocatively in front of the England players.
It is not known exactly what triggered Bellingham's reaction, but the altercation underscored the boiling tensions of a fiercely contested semi-final.

England's defeat was particularly cruel. Anthony Gordon had given them the lead early in the second half, only for Fernandez to level late and Lautaro Martinez to head a dramatic winner in the second minute of stoppage time.
