Aston Villa have completed the signing of Switzerland international Johan Manzambi from SC Freiburg in a club-record deal worth up to £59.5 million, beating Newcastle United to the highly-rated midfielder.
The 20-year-old, who shone at the 2026 World Cup with three goals in Switzerland's run to the quarter-finals, had verbally agreed personal terms with Newcastle but opted for Villa after the Birmingham club offered a more lucrative package and the lure of Champions League football.
How Villa beat Newcastle to Manzambi signing
Newcastle had agreed a £49 million deal with Freiburg for Manzambi, but Villa's late bid—rising to almost €70 million with add-ons—forced a dramatic U-turn. Despite a handshake deal with Eddie Howe's side, Manzambi delayed his final decision until after Switzerland's World Cup campaign, allowing Villa to swoop in.
The offer of Champions League football proved decisive. Villa will compete in Europe's elite competition next season after finishing in the Premier League's top four, while Newcastle missed out entirely. This advantage, coupled with Villa's recent 3-0 victory over Freiburg in the Europa League final, where Manzambi was named Young Player of the Season, helped seal the deal.
Manzambi's meteoric rise
Manzambi enjoyed a breakout campaign last season, registering seven goals and nine assists in 47 appearances across all competitions. A dynamic, box-to-box central midfielder, he was instrumental in Freiburg's deep Europa League run and earned a reputation as one of Europe's most exciting young talents.
"We missed him massively. He would have given us something different," said Switzerland assistant Bruno Berner after the midfielder missed the World Cup quarter-final defeat to Argentina through injury.
The transfer eclipses the £50 million Villa paid Everton for Amadou Onana in 2024, underlining the club's ambition under Unai Emery.
