Villa Land World Cup Star in Club-Record Deal
Aston Villa have sealed the signing of highly-rated Swiss midfielder Johan Manzambi from Freiburg for a club-record fee, seeing off late competition from Newcastle United.
The deal, worth just over £50m according to BBC Sport, surpasses the £50m Villa paid for Amadou Onana two years ago. Sky Sports report the total package could reach £59.5m (€70m) with add-ons. Manzambi had been on the verge of joining Newcastle after they agreed a £49m fee, but Villa’s late move and the lure of playing under Unai Emery proved decisive.
The 20-year-old arrives at Villa Park on the back of an outstanding World Cup campaign with Switzerland, scoring three goals in their run to the quarter-finals. He also shone in last season’s Europa League, where he was named Young Player of the Season, netting seven times in 47 appearances across all competitions as Freiburg finished seventh in the Bundesliga.
