Former Ashley Cole has opened up about the agonising penalty miss that ended England's Euro 2012 campaign, admitting it "killed me" after the high of scoring in the Champions League final just weeks earlier.

Cole, widely regarded as one of the finest left-backs of his generation, was part of a Chelsea side that defied the odds to beat Bayern Munich on penalties in their own stadium. The defender coolly converted his spot-kick in that shootout, but when he stepped up for England against Italy in the quarter-finals of Euro 2012, the outcome was very different.

Contrasting Fates from the Spot

In the immediate aftermath of Chelsea's stunning triumph in Munich, Cole had experienced the rollercoaster of emotions that comes with a shootout victory. "I scored my penalty in the Champions League final. I thought, 'I can do this again for England.' But football is cruel," Cole recalled in an interview with FourFourTwo.

"Missing in the Euro 2012 shootout killed me. I’d scored in the Champions League final shootout just a few weeks earlier. To go from that high to that low so quickly was devastating."

The victory over Bayern Munich on 19 May 2012 had been one of Chelsea's greatest moments, but for Cole, the memory was quickly tainted by England's exit to Italy on 24 June.

The Penalty That Haunted England

After a tense 0-0 draw over 120 minutes, the quarter-final went to penalties. England had a chance to banish their shootout demons, but misses from Cole and Ashley Young allowed Italy to advance. Cole's effort was saved by Gianluigi Buffon, diving low to his right.

"I picked my spot, but Buffon read me. It still hurts to this day," Cole said. "We had a great team, and we believed this time would be different. But it wasn't meant to be."

The miss added to England's lengthy list of penalty heartbreaks, following similar failures at World Cup 1990, Euro 1996, World Cup 1998, and Euro 2004. For Cole, who had been England's most consistent performer throughout the tournament, it was a bitter end to his personal campaign.

A Legacy of Excellence, Tainted by a Single Step

Despite the miss, Cole's legacy remains intact. He earned 107 caps for England, playing in three World Cups and two European Championships. At club level, he won three Premier League titles, seven FA Cups, the Champions League, and the Europa League.

"You can't let one moment define you," Cole reflected. "I'm proud of what I achieved with Chelsea and Arsenal, and for England. But that penalty... it's the one that got away."
