In his post-match assessment, reported by the BBC, Mourinho acknowledged Alexander-Arnold's midfield experience with England and Liverpool but insisted that he was not a midfielder. That judgment provides the central tension in assessing the selection: the manager used him in the position while drawing a distinction between his experience there and his suitability for it.

Real Madrid's suspensions shaped the selection

BBC Sport reported that suspensions for Eduardo Camavinga, Arda Guler and Bernardo Silva had left Mourinho short of options. Those absences give the midfield start a specific selection context, making the available personnel an essential part of understanding the decision.

The report also identified this as the first competitive match in which Alexander-Arnold and fellow right-back Denzel Dumfries had started together. Analytically, that makes the match relevant to how Mourinho can accommodate both players, although the suspensions remain central to interpreting this particular combination.

Alexander-Arnold's creative contribution and midfield difficulties

The tactical praise can coexist with the possession and physical difficulties Mourinho identified; neither needs to erase the other.

Versatility and the question of a permanent role
